Types of Massage
Lomi Lomi
Lomi Lomi is a Hawaiian style of massage rooted in an ancient healing art passed down within Polynesian families, each with their own particular style. Literally, Lomi Lomi translates “to break up into small pieces” or “ a method to rub, press, crush, massage or rub out”. Native Hawaiians say the true definition of Lomi Lomi is reconnecting with the spirit---to bring alignment back to the individual in body, mind and spirit.
On the physical level, Lomi Lomi is distinctive in that it employs the gentle use of forearms, elbows and hands in a rhythmic, weaving “dance” over the body. It is both vigorous and soothing, benefiting the increased circulation of blood and lymph and helping to free toxins from sore muscles. Breath awareness is essential in Lomi Lomi. “Mana” or power is generated through rhythmic breathing during a Lomi session which can bring vitality and rejuvenation back to the body.
Spiritually, Lomi Lomi is prayerful work on the part of the practitioner. The loving intent of this right-brain healing art is to recognize the divine nature of all living things. Lomi Lomi creates a sacred space where the heart, hand, body and soul can connect with the source of all life and deep healing can take place.
Reflexology
“Reflexology is the study, science and art of using specific touch techniques on reflex maps, resembling a shape of the human body, that are believed to exist on the feet, hands and outer ears.” Thus, by pressing specific reflexive areas on the feet, hand or ears, you can access certain organs, glands, body parts and energetic points to facilitate healing, relaxation and homeostasis (a balanced normalization of body functioning).
Overworked and abused feet and hands welcome the relaxed feeling of well being and increased energy of reflexology. This is an excellent treatment for people who stand all day or do repetitive work with their hands.
La Stone or Hot Stone Therapy
La Stone or hot stone therapy is a complete body, mind and soul treatment. It involves the use of smooth, mostly Basalt stones, heated in water from 120-140 degrees. (It may also sometimes use cooled marble stones for alternating hot and cold therapy.) The stones are placed at various energetic points on the body and you are gently massaged with oil and the hot stones themselves. The weight, texture and massage techniques of the warmed stones can produce a deeply, profound sense of relaxation.
Spiritually, the stone massage reconnects us to Mother Earth energy. The low energetic vibration of rocks is very grounding, especially if we seem disconnected from our bodies and scattered in our minds. Hot Stone therapy can induce a tranquil meditative state…you really can momentarily “go to another place.”
